The Art of Negative Painting in Watercolor

Broaden your knowledge of watercolor’s potential by adding the technique of negative paintingto your images. Negative painting, lost & found edges, and glazing work together to create a sense of depth and mystery, organically blending subject matter with the space around it. Create rich, clean darks by layering colors. Save lights in your images to produce a luminous glow. Various studies will allow you to understand the concepts and how they could apply to any subject matter. Color choices and brushwork will be discussed. Demonstrations and individual help will be on going. See how negative painting is a game-changer when used effectively.
Professional tube paint samples can be purchased at the workshop for a materials fee of $10. Small samples of Arches 140# CP paper will be on hand for purchase if you do not have any. Extra brushes and palettes will be available to use if needed.
Suggested materials list provided if you wish to purchase your own supplies before the workshop.
Margaret Dwyer holds a BFA and MFA in visual art. Her thesis work focused on trauma and its effect on women and creativity. This continued with an on going study of how the unconscious processes trauma. She works with a variety of mediums, but her favorite is watercolor.
Her paintings have been recognized in numerous juried national and international exhibitions and have been published in fine art books and magazines that include: Splash, America’s Best Watercolors - North Light Books - How Did You Paint That? - International Artist Books American Artist Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art Magazinen and Manhattan Arts Magazine.
Night Skies & Northern Lights

Watercolor is the perfect medium for portraying glowing night skies and capturing the feeling of light. This class will encourage you to blend colors on the paper with dramatic washes and effective color choices. Add a starry effect for sparkle and simple landscape elements that will offset your unique night skies. This is a fun subject to explore as weride out the end of winter.
All levels of painters are welcome
Brushes and palettes will be available to use if you do not have your own.
Paper samples will be on hand to try.
